This online observation followed a lesson delivered by Shawn Clankie while teaching in a Japanese high school English class. Unlike the last native English teacher teaching abroad Shawn is dressed very professionally in a suit jacket. Shawn is not only an ESL instructor, but he is a professor, researcher, and published author.
In this lesson, Shawn demonstrates what his classroom expectations are through exploring what is the best way to learn a language. Through this exploration, he plans for the students to authentically experience what a university English class would be like. He is very open with the students and details a variety of outside of the classroom earning opportunities like singing along to English music lyrics or posting in English on social media.
Shawn is a very personable instructor, he tries to relate tot he student using personal stories in his lecture. I don’t believe this is a full experience of how he is as a teacher because in this scenario he was brought in as a guest. Through watching him I can see how naturally he engages the students, he speaks very clearly at a good pace, with passion about his topic. He would be a very effective teacher through the use of his knowledge and ability to build relationships with his students. Although this is not “his” class he has completely motivated them to participate in his lesson. He demonstrates many abilities I hope to incorporate into my own classroom.
